Whenever we try to start off in a new field, we are beset by a whole flood of technical terms and procedures that make zero sense to us. Such terms fall into the regular parlance of those working in that field, but is very intimidating to someone who is only starting off in that sector.

While there are some basic terms involved in digital marketing that allow one to understand the fundamentals of how it works, there are certain secondary terms one might want to be familiar with before completely stepping into the world of digital marketing.
These are the concepts of digital marketing that are really important in the professional field.

  • Affiliate marketing

    Affiliate marketing, according to definition is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate's own marketing efforts. This essentially means that a product can be marketed by a third party who is given a commission if the product is sold.
    For example, if there is a brand A which has a product you recommend on your website as a part of the brand’s affiliate program and your reader uses the link to go to the brand’s website to make a purchase- you get a commission from the sale. This is one of the oldest processes of digital marketing, one that is not used as often as it should be.

  • Web Analytics

    Web Analytics -It is not just enough to keep marketing your website and product. Any form of marketing will involve a whole process of evaluation to understand what kind of results you are getting from your marketing strategy.
    This is where Web Analytics play a huge role. The process of Web Analysis involves the collection, sorting and study of web data to optimize your investment by understanding user preference and behavior. Web analytics uses information like page views and number of visitors to a website to gauge web traffic and map popular market trends.

  • Local SEO

    Local SEO If you have figured out the meaning of SEO, this should be a simpler concept to grasp. Local SEO is using certain techniques to get a higher rank on location based searches. Location based searches usually filter search results containing geographic modifiers. There is also a section of lists that point out specific points on the map that are available on the search results page. There are also map search results generated by the location service provider, where your results can be optimized.

  • Online Display Advertising

    Online Display Advertising- It is a little bit like a digital billboard. It is shown to whatever my target audience is when they are surfing online but not searching for your product or service.
    When a potential customer is online, you have to keep your brand in front of them as much as possible, because more often than not no-one searches for specific things but are just mulling around their favorite pages. This is where it becomes imperative to keep pushing your product as banners or side ads on other websites.

  • Remarketing

    Remarketing is the way of targeting ads at people who have already been to your website once. Using a javascript tag, remarketing involves putting a cookie in the user’s browser. This cookie will be responsible for displaying ads on the browser based on the products the user has shown interest in.
    Remarketing targets the conversion rate, bridging the gap between a viewer and a buyer in your website. Remarketing ads also serve to provide the user with the most relevant ads they want to see .

  • Conversion

    A conversion is what happens after a user has seen your advert. If they purchase a product, sign up for a newsletter, downloaded your app or did anything that you deem valuable- it is counted as a conversion.
    A conversion tracker is a tool that gives you the statistics of your conversions; while the conversion optimizer is a process by which your position in each Google Adword auction is optimized to avoid unprofitable clicks and push more profitable clicks for your product.

  • Online Lead Generation

    It is marketing term that allows a company to generate consumer interest or inquiry into the business, product or service. A lead is essentially a contact for a prospective customer, and is made through reward programs, loyalty programs and e-newsletter acquisition etc.
